From Tradition to Innovation: The ‘Digital Intelligence’ Transformation Path of the Ceramic Industry in Luozhuang District, Linyi City, Shandong Province

In the exhibition hall of Huaman Tian Cultural and Creative Industry Co.Ltd.in Luozhuang District,Linyi City, landscape paintings and floral paintings are displayed in succession. These"paintings"have the grandeur of masterworks and are dazzling, but this is not an art exhibition.Instead, these are artistic ceramic tiles produced by Huaman Tian.By employing new technologies,Huaman Tian integrates cultural creativity into their products. In just two years, their domestic market share has reached over65%,marking a"new starting point"for the transformation of the traditional ceramic industry in Luozhuang District.

“The paintings on the tiles are created by a3D inkjet printer imported from Italy, which allows for personalized customization based on customer preferences. In just5minutes,we can produce300square meters of tiles!”said Li Lianjie,Production and Design Director at Huaman Tian.“Currently, our production orders are scheduled for the second half of the year, and more than60%of our customers are high-end,personalized clients. Our average monthly sales have exceeded30million yuan.”

In the1990s,the ceramic industry was the leading industry in Luozhuang District, accounting for45%of the local GDP.However,in2015,the entire ceramic industry faced a"Waterloo"due to market and technological innovation factors.Li Hongshan, the founder of Huaman Tian, also lost his job in this shutdown"storm"and was uncertain about the future.“By chance,I went to Jiangxi and discovered they could paint on ceramic slabs.I thought it was very novel and wanted to try it.I brought along three or four people, rented a cow shed, and slowly started working on it,”Li Hongshan said.

In2019,new opportunities arose when Linyi City formulated the“Work Plan for Promoting the Integration and Upgrade of the Ceramic Tile Industry to Achieve High-Quality Development.”Luozhuang District assigned nearly ten departments related to industrial development to form a special task force for the transformation and upgrading of the ceramic tile industry, conducting in-depth research and discussions with enterprises.Li Hongshan's small workshop was included, and the main issue he faced was"securing land for a new factory."

With land indicators tight,Luozhuang District allocated120acres from the2,000acres of land vacated by closed enterprises for Li Hongshan’s factory construction, with dedicated staff to handle procedures. The project was started, constructed, and put into operation within the same year.

With the new factory,Li Hongshan's company entered the"fast lane"of development. However,as the business expanded, the shortage of design talent became a new constraint on growth.Upon learning this,Luozhuang District promptly connected with universities inside and outside the province, recruiting over30professional talents.

Today, leveraging live streaming platforms,Li Hongshan sells products nationwide and exports to six countries and regions, with an annual output value reaching300million yuan.Riding the"tailwind"of transformation and upgrading,he is now planning new development prospects.Luozhuang District actively promotes the development of leading enterprises and R&D institutions, supports key enterprises in creating national, provincial, and municipal manufacturing innovation platforms, trains and delivers diversified technical talents, and timely transforms research achievements. The goal is to drive the ceramic industry towards digital intelligence, diversified product structures, and varied product categories, aiming to exceed10billion yuan in ceramic industry output value by2026.
